SCI-MX Nutrition Pro V-Gain Vegan Protein

4.3

The SCI-MX Nutrition Pro V-Gain is one of the most popular vegan protein powders in the UK, and after testing it for a couple of weeks as both a pre- and post-workout shake, it's easy to see why. Packing 33g of protein per scoop with zero sugar, it's a genuinely strong plant-based option for building a vegan bodybuilding diet or simply topping up your daily protein intake.

SCI-MX is one of the bigger names in sports nutrition, and the Pro V-Gain blends soy, pea and rice protein into a powder that punches above its weight on both nutrition and taste. Here's how it held up in testing.

Pros

  • 33g of protein per scoop from a soy, pea and rice blend
  • Zero sugar and low in fat and carbs
  • Genuinely great chocolate flavour
  • Smooth, lump-free mix with plant-based milk
  • Versatile, works as a shake, snack or meal replacement

Cons

  • Slightly less creamy when mixed with water alone
  • Only three flavours to choose from

Nutrition and ingredients

The Pro V-Gain is built entirely on plant-based ingredients, led by an effective protein blend of pea, rice and soy. It also includes ModCarb (a combination of buckwheat, quinoa, oat bran and amaranth) plus fat-reduced cocoa powder and natural thickeners such as xanthan and guar gum.

A 45g serving (one scoop) contains 33g of protein, 3.6g of carbs, 2.8g of fibre and just 1.1g of fat, with no sugar. On top of that, it delivers a useful spread of vitamins and minerals including zinc, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, and vitamins B12 and B6.

That nutritional profile is what makes it so flexible. Whether you reach for it as a post-workout shake, a between-meals snack or a meal replacement, you're getting a meaningful dose of protein alongside the essential micronutrients your body needs.

Key features

  • High protein content: an advanced soy, pea and rice blend delivers 33g per scoop, with no dairy in sight, ideal for plant-based dieters.
  • Good pre-workout option: its magnesium and vitamin B6 content supports energy production, helping to counter pre-session fatigue.
  • Supports muscle growth: the high protein content helps build new muscle mass and maintain existing lean muscle.
  • Rich in amino acids: it contains L-glycine, L-arginine and BCAAs, which are especially valuable on a vegan diet.
  • Multipurpose: use it as a pre- or post-workout drink, a meal replacement or simply an extra protein source.
  • Zero sugar.

Taste and mixability

Vegan proteins don't always nail the flavour, but the Pro V-Gain won us over with its chocolate variant. It tastes excellent, and none of our team could find a bad word for it. It's also available in strawberry and vanilla, but we stuck with good old chocolate for this review.

Mixed with water, the chocolate flavour stays smooth and tasty, though it's noticeably less creamy. Switch to a plant-based milk and it goes up a level: we tried both almond and oat milk and it came out consistently smooth and rich every time.

Get the smoothest shake

Use a shaker cup and mix thoroughly. Done properly, the Pro V-Gain produces a reliably lump-free, creamy shake. Add a scoop to around 300ml of liquid, shake for 10 to 15 seconds, then let it settle for a minute before drinking.

When and how to use it

Your best bet is to take a serving after training, but it also works well as a between-meals snack to aid recovery. Remember, muscle growth happens outside the gym. If you're using it as a meal replacement, it's well suited to first thing in the morning or before bed. For best results, we'd suggest up to three servings a day.

Does it work?

It's no miracle worker, but used consistently alongside a sensible training and diet plan, the Pro V-Gain delivers. It does exactly what a good protein powder should: supports recovery and muscle maintenance without any fuss. If you want a high-quality vegan protein from a reputable brand, it's an easy one to recommend.

It's also telling that, at the time of our review, over 65% of buyers on Amazon UK had given it a 5-star rating. Between its effectiveness, taste and value, it consistently stands out from the crowd.

If you're weighing up SCI-MX's range, it's worth noting they make a second plant-based option too. You can read our review of the SCI-MX Nutrition Ultra Plant for the comparison.
