Huel Complete Protein Review

Just so you know, if you click on a product on and decide to buy it, we may earn a small commission.

Huel kindly sent Best Vegan a tub of their brand new Huel Complete Protein Powder, a brand new product from the innovative nutrition company, which we received before it was revealed to the public back on June 1st.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by brandless packaging – a large tub of their new complete protein completely unbranded. After a bit of research, it seems like they weren’t quite ready with their product branding at that stage.

Since then, we’ve been regularly using Huel Complete Protein over the past few weeks to ensure we provide you, the reader, with a full and frank, unbiased review of Huel’s Complete Protein powder.

So, what was our verdict? Read on to find out.

Huel seems to have really pulled it out of the bag with this one. Just a quick visit to their Huel Complete Protein product page and you can get an idea of just how much work they’ve put into this protein powder, to make sure that it’s one of the most nutritionally balanced vegan (and non-vegan) protein powders on the market.

Huel Complete Protein is a nutritionally complete, plant-based, high-protein snack that contains more essential amino acids (EAAs) per gram than whey protein. It’s made from sustainably sourced, high-quality, animal-free ingredients – hemp, faba, and pea protein.

One of the biggest selling points of Huel Complete Protein is it’s nutritionally complete profile. Put simply, it contains all 26 essential vitamins and minerals that the human body needs – something which is very important to consider when following the vegan lifestyle.

But what other nutritional benefits does it bring? And what are the nutritional drawbacks of Complete Protein? We explored the nutritional profile to find out.

Let’s start with the most important numbers.

One scoop of Huel Complete Protein contains 20g of protein, with 5g of BCAAs and 9g of EAAs (essential amino acids). Essential amino acids cannot be produced by the human body and must be sourced wholly from your diet, so it’s great to see Huel adding EAAs to their products. This comes into clear focus when the best sources of EAAs are from animal proteins, so getting them into a vegan diet can sometimes prove tricky.

Each scoop provides 105kcal, which we love! It’s so important to have a low-calorie protein powder, and Huel have firmly ticked this box. It also allows you to mix it with a plant milk such as oat or soya without feeling guilty about the extra calories.

Each serving also contains around 3g of carbohydrates and 1.4g of fats – both of these values vary slightly depending on flavour. In terms of macros, Complete Protein is a very well-balanced vegan protein powder. It’s also gluten-free, sugar-free and GMO-free.

We’ll be absolutely honest here – 20g of protein feels a little low when you compare it to other vegan protein powders on the market, such as the SCI-MX Nutrition Ultra Plant. Personally, we would have liked to have seen it around the 30g mark, or 25g at the very least. That being said, we don’t know of any other vegan protein powders that provide such a complete nutritional profile, so we think that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks here.

Taste & Mixability

We were kindly sent the Chocolate Fudge Brownie flavour by Huel, so our review of the taste is based solely on this flavour.

We’ve tasted a huge number of vegan protein powders, and I can quite honestly say that Huel Complete Protein is the best tasting vegan protein on the market today. It blows the competition out of the water. There is no sickly sweet flavour, and absolutely no weird vegan aftertaste that you sometimes get from other vegan protein powders.

We’ve honestly never experienced such a great tasting protein powder as Huel Complete Protein. It tastes like a chocolate milkshake!

We mixed it regularly with both water and oat milk. Whilst mixing it with oat milk was a clear winner and our preferred method of mixing, Complete Protein also mixed very well with water.

When mixing with a plant-based milk, we recommend using 400ml to one scoop of Huel to get a nice, even consistency with no lumps and a smooth, silky tasting shake.

Well, what can we say?

Huel has pulled out all the stops with this one, and we’re genuinely impressed. Complete Protein is the new go-to vegan protein powder on the market.

For those looking for big protein numbers, this might not quite fit the bill for you. At 20g of protein per scoop, it pales in comparison to other vegan protein powders (some reaching 35g+ per scoop).

However, it’s important to reiterate the nutritional profile of Complete Protein – Huel isn’t trying to position Complete Protein as the highest protein content available to buy. Instead, it’s providing a solution to those who look at the bigger picture, and understand that it’s not all about protein. It’s about the complete nutritional profile and the end benefits to the user, and Huel ticks all the boxes with Complete Protein.
