The Omvits Vegan Omega 3 supplement is one of the best algae-oil omega-3 options for anyone following a plant-based diet. It delivers 400mg of DHA per serving from sustainable marine algae, with no fish, no gelatine and barely any of the fishy aftertaste that puts people off. We bought a bottle ourselves and tested it over a couple of weeks to see how it performs.
As always, we purchased the product with our own money and tested it over an extended period to give you a complete, unbiased review.

Overview
Omvits is a British vitamin and supplements company dedicated to high-quality vegan supplements that are both affordable and kinder to the planet. Although a relatively young company, founded in 2017, Omvits has grown quickly into one of the leaders in quality vegan supplements, and their Vegan Omega 3 supplement is no exception.
Following a vegan lifestyle, you may struggle to get enough omega-3 into your diet. With each serving of two capsules providing 160% of your recommended daily omega-3 intake, Omvits more than covers the gap.
What's more, it's 100% algae-based. Fish get their high omega-3 content from algae in the first place, so why not go straight to the source? To see how Omvits Vegan Omega 3 Algae Oil performs, we bought a bottle of 60 capsules and put them to the test for a couple of weeks. Here's what we thought.
Main features
- 100% plant-based: Omvits uses clean marine algae to provide your daily dose of omega-3, the very same algae where fish get theirs. The capsules themselves are gelatine-free.
- High quality standards: manufactured to global food-safety standards, so the product you receive is among the best you can get from a vegan omega-3 supplement.
- Fully sustainable: sourced from farmed algae, which is renewable and does not harm the oceans.
- Independently batch tested: every batch is tested to ensure it's free from heavy metals and microbes.
- Free from allergens: the capsules are free from gluten, lactose, nuts, soya and seafood. As always, double-check with the manufacturer in case anything has changed since our review.
- Easy to swallow: while some capsules can be a struggle to get down, we found Omvits very easy to swallow.
Ingredients and nutrition
As with all our product reviews, we scrutinise the nutritional content and ingredients to make sure they're of the best quality. Ingredients-wise, Omvits Omega 3 is refreshingly basic, in a good way.
Inside each capsule you've got 100% vegan algal oil (algal simply means anything algae-related) and vitamin E. That's it: no additives and no preservatives. The capsules themselves are made from red seaweed, modified corn starch, vegetable glycerine and water.
You don't want your omega-3 supplement padded out with filler ingredients, and there are products on the market that are, so it always pays to check the label.
Nutritionally, the recommended dose is two capsules per day. With 60 capsules per bottle, that's about a month's supply. A single capsule gives you 80% of your recommended omega-3 for the day, so you could stick with one if you aren't fussed about topping 100% and want the bottle to last longer.
Taste
It's hard to get around the fishy taste with omega-3. Whatever supplement you choose, there's almost always going to be some fishiness.
The difference we found with Omvits Vegan Omega 3 is that there's little fishy aftertaste and no oily, fishy smell when you open the bottle. To help things along, we took ours with breakfast each morning so there was no lingering fishiness through the day. These are some of the better-tasting vegan omega-3 supplements we've tried.
Tip
Take your omega-3 with a meal that contains some fat. It helps absorption and, in our experience, keeps any faint fishy note from lingering.
Value for money
Cost is an important factor when choosing a supplement, especially if you plan to take it long-term. At the same time, you want a supplement made from high-quality ingredients, which usually means paying a little more. Omvits strikes a sensible balance: a clean, tested, algae-based formula at a price that won't sting if you're buying a fresh bottle each month.

Why omega-3 DHA matters
DHA is one of the key omega-3 fatty acids, and getting enough is harder on a plant-based diet. The benefits commonly linked to omega-3 DHA include:
- Heart health: omega-3 can improve risk factors for heart disease by supporting normal function and helping reduce inflammation.
- Brain health: DHA makes up around 97% of the omega-3 in the brain and helps support normal brain function.
- Eye health: omega-3 DHA supports normal vision and can help with dry eyes.
- Pregnancy: an omega-3 DHA supplement is linked to normal brain development in babies.
- Joints: omega-3 may help ease joint stiffness and discomfort.
Frequently asked questions
Is Omvits Vegan Omega 3 actually vegan?
Yes. The omega-3 DHA comes from marine algae oil rather than fish, and the softgel capsules are gelatine-free, made from red seaweed, modified corn starch, vegetable glycerine and water.
How much omega-3 DHA do you get per serving?
The recommended serving of two capsules provides 400mg of omega-3 DHA, around 160% of the typical 250mg daily target. A single capsule still gives you roughly 80%.
Does Omvits Vegan Omega 3 taste fishy?
There is a mild fishy note, as with any omega-3 supplement, but we found Omvits had little fishy aftertaste and no oily smell on opening the bottle. Taking it with breakfast avoids any lingering taste.
How long does one bottle last?
Each bottle holds 60 capsules. At the recommended two-a-day serving that is about a month's supply, or roughly two months if you take one capsule daily.
