Cable Lateral Raise: How to Do It and Why It Beats Dumbbells

Most people cannot hinge, and it is the reason their deadlift looks like a bad squat and their lower back complains after a session of Romanian deadlifts. The pattern is simple to describe and awkward to feel: push your hips backwards, let your chest travel down as a consequence, and keep your spine long throughout. Nothing about that is intuitive if you have spent twenty years sitting down and bending from the waist to pick things up.
Learn it and a whole shelf of exercises opens up. Fail to learn it and every hip-dominant lift you attempt will quietly become a knee-dominant one, with your lower back covering the difference.
Start with nothing in your hands. Adding weight to a pattern you cannot feel just makes the fault heavier.
The two-minute drill that teaches it
Stand about 15cm from a wall, facing away. Soften your knees, then reach your hips back until your backside touches the wall, and come back up. Step 3cm further away and repeat. Each step increases the range, and because your target is behind you, your body works out the movement on its own without you having to think about angles.
It protects your back by giving it a job it can do. A braced spine transmitting force is doing what it's built for; a flexing spine under load is not. Learning to move at the hip is the single biggest change most people can make to how they lift a heavy box off the floor.
It builds the back of your body. Glutes and hamstrings respond to loaded hinging far better than to any machine isolation work. If your legs look developed from the front and empty from behind, this is the gap.
Everything heavy is a hinge. Deadlifts, swings, cleans, rows, sled work. The pattern transfers straight into all of it, so the time you spend on the drills pays back across your whole training.
It counts as proper strength work. The NHS asks adults for muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days a week, and two hinge sessions cover the posterior half of that requirement without needing a gym.
Squatting instead of hinging. The knees travel forward, the hips drop, and the chest stays up. Watch yourself from the side on your phone: if your shins tilt noticeably, you're squatting. The wall drill fixes this faster than any cue.
Rounding at the bottom. Almost always a range problem rather than a strength problem. Your hamstrings run out before your hands reach your shins, so your pelvis tucks and your lumbar spine takes over. Stop higher. The range will grow.
Letting the weight drift forward. A kettlebell that swings away from your legs at the bottom turns a hip exercise into a lower back exercise. Pull your shoulder blades down and keep the load brushing your thighs.
Hyperextending at the top. Leaning back and squeezing hard at lockout feels powerful and does nothing useful, while compressing your lumbar spine. Stand tall, ribs down, glutes tight, stop.
Holding your breath for a whole set. Brace and breathe out at the top of each rep, then take a new breath before the next one. Ten reps on one lungful is how people go light-headed on their fourth set.
Once the unloaded pattern looks identical on rep one and rep twelve, add weight. Start with a single kettlebell held in both hands, or a pair of dumbbells, before you go near a barbell.
A pair of adjustable dumbbells is the most flexible way to load any of these at home, since the jumps can be small enough to keep the pattern intact.
Progress by adding weight only when the last rep of a set looks like the first. If the final rep of your twelve is rounder and shallower than the opening one, that's your ceiling for now, and it's a technique ceiling rather than a strength one.
A hip hinge is bending forward by pushing your hips backwards while your knees stay softly bent and your spine stays long. Your shins stay close to vertical and the movement happens almost entirely at the hip joint. It is the pattern underneath the deadlift, the Romanian deadlift, the kettlebell swing and the good morning.
A squat drops your hips down between your feet with a lot of knee bend; a hinge sends your hips backwards with very little. If your knees travel forward over your toes and your torso stays upright, you are squatting. If your backside moves towards the wall behind you and your chest comes down, you are hinging.
Mainly the glutes and hamstrings, which extend your hips to bring you back upright. Your spinal erectors and deep trunk muscles work isometrically to keep your back from rounding, and your lats hold whatever you are holding close to your body. It is the most reliable pattern there is for loading the back of your body.
Hold a broomstick down your spine touching the back of your head, your upper back and your tailbone. Hinge forward. If all three points stay in contact through the whole movement and you feel a stretch behind your thighs rather than pressure in your lower back, the pattern is right.
Usually because your spine is doing the bending instead of your hips, or because you are going deeper than your hamstring length allows. Shorten the range until the stretch stays in your hamstrings, keep the weight close to your legs, and brace your trunk before you move rather than halfway down.
Two sessions a week is plenty for most people. Learn it unloaded for a week or two, then add a light kettlebell or a pair of dumbbells, and progress the weight only when every rep looks the same as the first one.
