A turbo trainer turns the bike you already own into an indoor trainer, which is the whole appeal: your saddle, your bars, your fit, and none of the compromise of a gym bike. What trips people up is that the phrase covers two products that behave nothing alike. At one end you have magnetic units that clamp onto your rear wheel for under £100, at the other, direct drive smart trainers that replace the wheel entirely and let Zwift dial the resistance up as the road tilts. This guide covers both, but it does not pretend they are equivalent.

Here is the position, stated plainly: if you expect to ride indoors more than a handful of times over a British winter, buy direct drive. The gap in price is roughly £200 to £300, and it buys you four things that matter every single session.
You take the rear wheel off, so your tyre stops being a consumable. Wheel-on trainers grind a flat spot into a rear tyre within a couple of months of regular use, and most people end up buying a dedicated trainer tyre anyway, which eats into the saving. Second, the power numbers are usable. A wheel-on magnetic trainer estimates your output from a speed curve, and that estimate drifts with tyre pressure, roller tension and temperature; a direct drive unit measures at the hub and typically claims accuracy within 1% to 2.5%. Third, resistance control in Zwift or TrainerRoad actually works, so a 9% gradient feels like a 9% gradient rather than a number on a screen. And they are quieter, because nothing is pressing against a rubber tyre at 40kph.
Wheel-on still has a place. If you need something for twenty minutes of leg-opening before a Sunday race, or you genuinely will only use it in January, spending £90 instead of £400 is the sensible call. Just be honest with yourself about which of those you are.

Three things, and manufacturers are loose with all of them.
Controllable resistance. The app tells the trainer how hard to make it. That is the headline feature, and it is what turns a turbo trainer from a boredom machine into something you will actually use. Look for the maximum simulated gradient, expressed as a percentage, and the maximum power in watts.
Protocols. Bluetooth FTMS and ANT+ FE-C are the two standards that matter. Bluetooth covers phones, tablets and most laptops; ANT+ FE-C is what Garmin and Wahoo head units speak, and it handles several connections at once without dropping out. A growing number of trainers, including both Elite units here, now add WiFi, which sidesteps the flaky Bluetooth dropouts that plague crowded flats.
Power accuracy. Every brand quotes a figure. Treat it as a claim, not a measurement, because independent verification is rare and the number is usually given under ideal conditions. What the claim does tell you is the tier the manufacturer is aiming at: +/- 1% is a trainer with a real integrated power meter, +/- 2% is the mainstream standard, and +/- 3% or worse means the figure is estimated rather than measured.
Indoor riding is also an efficient way to hit a weekly activity target, which the NHS puts at 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity for adults aged 19 to 64. Two structured hours on a trainer will cover the vigorous end of that in a way that a soggy commute rarely does.

The KICKR CORE has been the default answer to "which turbo trainer should I buy" for years, and the second-generation version keeps that spot. Wahoo's official UK spec page claims +/- 2% power accuracy, 1800 watts of maximum resistance and a 16% maximum simulated incline, which covers anything short of a track sprinter attacking an Alpine ramp. It is a direct drive unit with a proper flywheel, and the ride feel is the reason people keep recommending it: the momentum through the pedal stroke is closer to a real road than any wheel-on trainer manages.
The version worth buying is the Zwift Cog and Click configuration at around £400. Instead of fitting a cassette to match your drivetrain, you get a single wide sprocket that works with 8 to 12 speed chains, and a small handlebar-mounted Click controller that changes resistance in Zwift. You leave the bike in one gear and forget about shifting. If the number on the screen needs to be right, the Avanti is the one. Elite's official product page states +/- 1% power accuracy from an integrated power meter, 2100 watts at 40kph and an 18% maximum simulated slope, with ANT+, Bluetooth and WiFi all on board. That accuracy claim puts it in the same conversation as a crank-based power meter, which matters if you are running structured training plans, doing FTP tests, or comparing indoor numbers against outdoor rides.
WiFi is the underrated feature. Bluetooth in a block of flats is a mess of dropped connections and mid-interval reconnects; a trainer that joins your home network sidesteps most of it and handles its own firmware updates. The Flex Feet allow a small amount of side-to-side movement, which takes some of the harshness out of longer sessions. At £548.99 it is the most expensive smart trainer here, and the 4kg flywheel is lighter than some rivals, which a few riders find gives a slightly less weighty feel at low cadence.

The Rivo is Elite's answer to the KICKR CORE, priced within a few pounds of it at £403.49 and matching the Avanti's 18% maximum slope and 2000 watts at 40kph. The difference from its more expensive sibling is how power is arrived at: the Rivo estimates rather than measuring with a dedicated power meter, and Elite quotes +/- 2.5% accuracy as a result. In practice that is fine for Zwift racing and general fitness, and slightly loose if you are chasing marginal gains in a training plan.
What makes it interesting against the Wahoo is that it keeps WiFi and Zwift protocol support at the same price point. Choose it over the KICKR CORE 2 if you want the steeper gradient simulation and a network connection instead of Bluetooth; choose the Wahoo if you value ride feel, ANT+ FE-C and a longer track record of firmware stability. The Rivo is also compact, which counts for something if the trainer lives in a spare room rather than a garage.

Direct drive under £300 used to mean second hand. The CYCPLUS R200 is one of a wave of trainers from newer brands undercutting the established names, and on paper it is generous: 2200 watts of resistance and 19% incline simulation, which is a higher figure than anything else here, for £299.
Say the obvious thing out loud, though. A budget direct drive unit from a less established brand carries real risk that a Wahoo or an Elite does not, and it is not about the metal. It is about firmware updates, app compatibility when Zwift changes something, and what happens two years in when a component fails and you need a spare part or a warranty claim answered. The hardware is usually fine; the support ecosystem is the gamble. Buy the R200 if the price difference is the thing standing between you and riding indoors at all, and accept that trade honestly rather than expecting Wahoo-grade backup.

Also £299, and aimed at a specific person: the heavy, powerful rider who tops out the resistance curve on cheaper trainers. The XX Pro handles up to 2500 watts, the highest ceiling on this list, which means a sprinter of 90kg-plus can go full gas out of a Zwift corner without the trainer capping the effort or the flywheel feeling overwhelmed.
For everyone else, that headline number is largely irrelevant, since most riders will never see 1000 watts, let alone 2500. The same caveat as the CYCPLUS applies here on firmware and long-term support, and the ThinkRider brand is better known among indoor racers than among casual riders. If you sprint hard and want direct drive without spending £400, this is the one to look at. If you mostly do endurance sessions and structured intervals, the extra headroom buys you nothing.

At £89.99 this is the entry point, and it is a genuinely different product from everything above. Your rear wheel stays on and sits against a magnetic roller, resistance changes through a handlebar lever with a set number of levels, and there is no power measurement or app control at all. Set it up, pick a level, ride.
The honest case for it is narrow but real. If you want to keep some fitness through a wet fortnight, spin the legs out before a race, or find out whether you can tolerate indoor riding before committing £400, this does the job for the price of a decent tyre. The case against is everything covered earlier: tyre wear, more noise, no controllable resistance, and speed-based estimates instead of measured power. Buy a dedicated trainer tyre if you end up using it weekly, and expect to want a direct drive unit within a season. A different animal again, and the only one here you would happily throw in a car boot. The Omnium Over-Drive holds the bike by the front fork with the rear wheel spinning on twin rollers, folds down flat in seconds, and weighs little enough to carry to a race. The Over-Drive version adds heavier resistance than the standard Omnium, so bigger riders can get properly warm rather than spinning air.
It is not a smart trainer, has no electronics, and it will not talk to Zwift. That is not what it is for. At £524.49 it is priced like a serious piece of kit because it is one, and the people who buy it are racers who need a reliable pre-race warm-up and time triallists who want something that packs small. As a primary indoor training tool it makes no sense; as a race-day tool it is the best of its type.

Many trainers ship without one, so budget for either buying a cassette or pulling the one off your rear wheel with a chain whip and a lockring tool. Check the freehub standard too, because Shimano HG, SRAM XDR and Campagnolo bodies are not interchangeable, and a 12-speed SRAM road drivetrain will not sit on an HG body.
The Zwift Cog setup dodges all of that. One wide sprocket replaces the cassette, chains from 8 to 12 speed run on it, and you leave the bike in a single gear for the whole ride while the app or the Click controller varies resistance. It suits households with more than one bike, riders who swap bikes seasonally, and anyone who does not fancy a workshop job. The catch is that you are handing gear selection to the software, which some riders never warm to.
Direct drive trainers are quiet in the sense that matters: your drivetrain and your fan will be louder than the trainer itself. Wheel-on units are not, because a roller pressed hard against a spinning tyre makes a rising whine that gets worse as you accelerate. Neither type is silent through a floor, since vibration travels down through the frame regardless.
Which brings you to the things nobody mentions until after you have bought the trainer. A thick trainer mat catches the sweat, protects the floor and cuts a surprising amount of transmitted noise. A proper fan is not optional; you have removed all the airflow that normally cools you outdoors, and without one you will overheat within twenty minutes and blame your fitness. If you will ride indoors more than a handful of times over a winter, yes. Direct drive removes the rear wheel, so there is no tyre wear, no slipping roller and no recalibrating every session. It is quieter, the power figures are far closer to reality, and the resistance is properly controllable in Zwift or TrainerRoad. Wheel-on trainers only make sense for occasional use or race-day warm-ups.
